In about the first century AD Romans built a banked wall around what became Chichester, not far behind the diverted course of the River Lavant. In the South East Quadrant there was space for two fine houses in the Pallants. Cawley Priory owes its name to the family one of whom, William Cawley in 1649, was a signatory to Charle's I's death warrant. East Pallant House, until about 1900, was owned and occupied by the Halstead family, ironfounders. |
| Cawleys and Halsteads have been City Mayors. These two houses had gardens beyond the city wall; the garden for East Pallant House was enclosed by flint walls and it spanned the river Lavant. Soon after the 1914 - 1918 war a young Halstead built, in traditional brick and flint, a house for herself in a part of this garden. The prospect is green bed and breakfast sussex at front and back although the river course may be dry for some of the year. | ![]() Click on the picture to enlarge it. |
